Sewage Treatment Plants

Entec biodisc treatment plant from Klargester, part of Kingspan EnvironmentalWhere connection to mains sewerage is not available, a sewage treatment plant can provide an effective and efficient solution. Increasing concern for the environment and new regulations have led many people to opt for a treatment plant rather than a traditional
septic tank
system.

Treatment plants use the action of natural aerobic bacteria to clean sewage effluent to a level much higher than that obtained through septic tanks. This reduces the possibility of damage to soakaway
systems
, and treatment systems are particularly useful where soil has
a low porosity.

Treatment plants use mechanical systems to aerate the sewage effluent, but are generally very quiet in operation, and - when correctly maintained a de-sludged - they should not cause any odour problems. Like septic tanks, they should be emptied of solid waste at least once a year.

We install high quality sewage treatment plants from manufacturers including Balmoral, Klargester and Titan.

For information about the size of treatment plant your property may require, read the Code of Practice from British Water - "Flows and Loads" - click here.

When considering a new system, it should be noted that any discharge, from either a septic tank or treatment system, is subject to a discharge consent approval from the Environment Agency.

Find out more about discharge consents on the Environment Agency website - click here. You can also download guidance notes and an application form for a consent to discharge from the EA website.

Reed Beds
Sometimes, the Environment Agency will require additional treatment of sewage effluent, after a septic tank and soakaway or treatment plant system. Reed beds can be used in these situations. The reeds release oxygen through their roots into the effluent and complete its treatment.
